NO, absolutely not.
Because chocolate is high in fat, calories and sugar it is not recommended to eat chocolate while losing weight. Not all chocolate is created equal. Good quality chocolate, like bitter 70% dark cocoa, has been proven to be higher in flavanols and antioxidants than milk chocolate, which consists of milk, cocoa, dairy products, emulsifiers and fillers. Studies suggest that the antioxidants in dark cocoa may help to improve heart health, increase endorphins, and even promote weight loss.
If you must eat chocolate, portion control is important. Keep your serving size to around 100 calories and less than 3 grams of fat. If you are craving a chocolate bar, the best choice is a York Peppermint Patty. This bar is not low in calories, but is low in fat at 2.5 grams per serving. Single serving 100 calorie bars and individually wrapped dark chocolates are another healthier chocolate option. Some safe for weight loss, low fat chocolate treats include: low fat fudgesicles, fat free puddings, low fat frozen yogurt, and light hot chocolate.
Sugar free chocolate is not a healthy choice for weight loss. They are loaded with artificial sweeteners, fat and calories. Packages of artificially sweetened chocolates warn consumers that if over consumed the chocolates will produce a laxative like effect. Sugar free chocolate is very expensive, and should be considered an occasional treat for people with diabetes.
Why do we crave chocolate in the first place? I think it’s because of its endorphin increasing and stress reducing sugar high- like effects. Overcome your chocolate craving by getting your mind off of it. Try drinking water, exercising, reading, or eating fruits and vegetables instead. These activities promote weight loss, and will help to shift your focus away from the craving. If your mind can’t control the craving, try one of the low fat options listed above.
