I have often walked by “The Downtown Deli,” 58 Grafton Street Charlottetowen which opened earlier this year. A few of my clients told me that the restaurant had many healthier menu options, so one day last week my friend Mariette and I decided to check it out. When I walked in the door I could smell home cooking! The atmosphere is typical for a diner, with great service. As I glanced over the menu I felt like I was in nutritionist heaven. The freshly made pizza has a honey whole wheat crust, the salads have homemade pomegranate and maple dressings, and they offered a wide variety of menu options and ethnic cuisines. Everything looked so good and healthy; the hardest decision was choosing what to eat.
Because I’m a sucker for a good salad, I chose the Berry Blast, which is a combination of fresh PEI berries topped with roasted almonds and cranberry goat cheese served over a bed of mixed greens with a homemade ginger pomegranate dressing. It is served with a crisp sesame breadstick and the dressing was on the side! Mariette ordered the Fire Roasted Vegetable Wrap on whole wheat, which consisted of a multitude of roasted vegetables, alfalfa sprouts and havarti cheese served with a side garden.
Needless to say- we both enjoyed our meals. The service was great and the food met my nutritional expectations. I also enjoyed the conversation Mariette and I had over our healthy meal! I will be visiting the Downtown Deli again- most likely sooner than later. If you’re looking for a healthy meal why not check it out someday for lunch.
