Well my half marathon is this weekend. Sunday 10 AM, www.princeedwardislandmarathon.com. Thank goodness the weatherforecast is no longer calling for rain. The thought of walking for 4 hour
s in the rain is not as romantic as it may seem. For such a long workout session, food and drink intake, is important. I follow the rule. "Nothing new on race day" I plan to take with me 100% coconut water. Love this stuff. http://www.vitacoco.com/. I mix it with mywater, mainly for the electrolytes, it has more then other sports drinks, and 15 times more potassium. Potassium is great for cramping. Not a fan of Gatorade and those sorts of drinks. They remind me of melted orange Popsicles, sweet and sickening.
I will also take with me a muffin that I made that has seeds/nuts/cranberries or a fruit protein bar. These bars are a recent find. Manufactured here in Charlottetown, http://shop.iwindirect.com/home.php. I really like their Dyna Whey protein. No fillers, soy, yeast or artificial colors.Get this no aspartame, how sweet is that. A must for me on race day is my smartwool socks. These babies keep out blisters. Hey you know what else is not fun while hiking 4 hours in the rain. BLISTERS. Properfitting socks and shoes make all the difference race day, this is oneof those lessons that you learn quickly. Kind of like frying bacon naked. Also something you will only do once. Another reason to not to eat pork.
Speaking of eating, the night before race day is a big pasta meal. I don't do the whole carb loading thing, the night before a race. I believe that is more for competition body building. The choice is yours on that one. The last thing I pack for race day is good music, good music makes everything good.....Good luck to all that are running and walking this year.
