Food has one primary role, to produce energy for the body. The more nutritious your choices the healthier you tend to be. It’s really quite simple; your body likes consistency and regular feedings. Aim to eat ev
ery 3-4 hours and choose smaller portions.
Recently people at the gym have been quizzing me on what my diet consists of. Well I eat several small meals in different food combinations throughout the day. I especially like to snack pre/post workout on protein shakes, almonds or hummus + celery. Fueling your body the right way for exercise will improve your performance.
Since beginning hot yoga earlier this fall I’ve mastered how to eat pre/post class. I've found that it’s best to practice hot yoga on empty and fuel your body after with a light meal of vegetables + protein. Drink at least 1 lt of water before class and rehydrate yourself after. Try not to gulp water during class, if you must drink water lightly sip. Be sure to find some natural sugars to add back into the body after so much sweating. Choose hydrating foods like celery, melons, citrus and lettuces after class.
On the flipside I get to eat a lot more on spin days. Well more carbohydrates I should define. Meighan sais we burn anywhere between 800-900 calories at cardio spin class. It
’s offered Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. For the evening class I always eat a large lunch with 2 servings of carbs like a whole wheat wrap or sandwich. One hour before class I snack on yogurt and berries or a protein shake. After class I enjoy eating a large salmon and spinach salad.
I really enjoy working out at Dynamic Fitness and have average 4-6 classes per week all Fall. It’s easy to work the classes into my schedule and the instructors are really encouraging. I’ve been especially faithful to Meighans Tuesday evening cardio spin class, and trust me it’s a hardcore workout. My gym pants are too big now- great excuse to buy some new Lululemons.
This Saturday I’m speaking to the young athletes at Eli Sport about proper nutrition for peak performance. I will share some tips for fueling your body for exercise while maximizing your nutrient intake. See you all athletes this weekend at Dynamic Fitness!
