It seems that during the month of December we balance a relationship with giving and receiving. Earlier in the month we give, later in the month we receive.  Why are we so generous in December? Why can’t we live this way year round?

Karmatic laws are enforced by the theory of cause and effect.  When you act in a positive way it creates more happiness in the world. Giving to others is one of the most heartwarming gestures we share. Whether it’s a gift, a promise or a hug, giving just feels great!

Spending time with my friend Karen is a gift in itself.  She is an elderly woman with few family members on the Island. She doesn’t drive and eats a basic “meat and potato” diet.  She’s proud to be 67 years old and has a phenomenal memory.  She’s also clairvoyant and healthy as a horse. She recently reached a normal BMI and is very thankful for my help with that.

Karen and I met at Overeaters Anonymous when I volunteered to speak for the group 3 years ago. She called the office and asked if I would be interested in sharing some tips with the group.  As a former food binger I knew that I could relate to the group members.  So I volunteered my time to help those people in need.

I wasn’t surprised when Karen recently informed me that she wanted to write a book.  Her mind is active and she has a vivid imagination. She is most definitely a free spirit. Karen has used computers before but doesn’t own one. This November she asked me if I would go computer shopping with her.  I told her that I could find her the BEST deal on a computer and she should just leave it up to me.

I’ll never forget the look on Karen’s face when I arrived at her apartment for our December visit.  She’s always happy to see me, but her face lit up when she saw a laptop bag.  I decided to GIVE Karen an old laptop computer of mine, which I hadn’t used in at least 2 years.  She had tears of joy in her eyes, gave me the biggest hug and told me that she loved me like a daughter.

You see the relationship between Karen and I revolves around giving and receiving.  Karen has given so much to me over the last 3 years: books, home cooked meals, candles, clairvoyant insight, hugs and good counsel. I really admire her so much. Having Karen in my life is a gift from God.

So this Christmas I urge you to give back to others as much as you receive. Small simple gestures can mean so much. Often the best gifts in life are free.
