Eating seasonaly is such a pleasure, why not try it. Here in the Maritimes we have a wide variety of top quality food right at our finger tips. I think that we sometimes take our local bounty for granted. We have just grown up with it, we expect it to always be there. As long as we continue to support our hardworking Farmers (who should be referred to as our local Artist), we will continue to have this bounty.

Initially, we think of winter as the most challenging time of year to make meals with locally produced food. It doesn’t have to be this way, it just takes a little time and a good recipe. Try this receipe on for taste, bet you go back for seconds.

Comforting Turnip Puff Casserole

2 Medium turnips, peeled and diced.  About 6 cups.
¼ cup dry bread crumbs
¼ cup buttermilk
½ nutmeg
1 tsp salt
1 egg, beaten
3tbsp butter
1tbsp honey
½ tsp cnnnamon

Cook your turnip until soft, then drain it and mash with a fork. Soak bread crumbs in buttermilk and stir in nutmeg, cinnamon, salt, honey and beaten egg. Combine bread crumb mixture with mashed turnip. Pour mixture into buttered 2 ½  quart caserole. Dot top with butter, a bit more cinnamon and dry bread crumbs. Bake at 350F for 10-12 minutes or until lightly browned on top.  Makes a great vegetable side dish for supper.
