How much protein have you had so far today? Wait, was that 20 grams of fibre yesterday or 25? With so many things to remember in the run of a day it is no wonder we could forget how much fibre we had. Who wants to keep track of how much water they drank last week? Yes it is important to know just how much you are actually getting. If you asked an overweight person, how important is losing weight to them, my guess is, it would be high on their list of important things. Yet it’s this lack of awareness that keeps us from reaching our goals.

There is a large discrepancy between what we think we eat and what we actually eat. Same with exercise, we seem to underestimate the amount of food we eat and we tend to overestimate the amount of exercise we do. It’s human nature, that’s why food/exercise journals work because they keep track for us. These food logs can be very helpful in revealing patterns in our habits. Clues as to why we are gaining and we want to be losing weight. It’s important for us to see on paper what we are actually consuming in a week.

Have you ever watched those “Weight loss Reality Shows” http://www.gillianmckeith.info/here-comes-the-bride ( love this show- love her shoes too!) when they put all the food a person has eaten in the last week, spread out on a table for the person to see just how much they do consume. Well think of a food log as your table of truth.

Why not keep track for 5 days of just how much you are consuming. You may be surprised. Your food log is just that, YOUR FOOD LOG. You can make it as simple or as complicated as you would like. Start with what is important to you. Some suggestions are Protein, Fibre, Water, Sleep, Exercise, Carbs, Starches, Calcium, mood, bowel movements, wine, sugar, positive thoughts, ect… At the end of the 5 days it may be informative to take stock of your week. What went well, why? What would you do differently, why? Give the food log an honest effort... what do you have to lose?
